Climate Change

Devastating typhoons in the Philippines, glaciers melting in Argentina, and droughts and deadly storms across the United States - these are just a few of the dramatic impacts climate change is having on our planet today. The Sisters of Mercy are actively working to curb climate change by adopting measures to reduce our own greenhouse-gas emissions and to advocate for bigger solutions in international agreements and in national, state and local public policies.

Partnering with the Global Catholic Climate Movement we urge world leaders to commit to ambitious climate action and solve this urgent moral crisis.  For more information, see climate change facts and Catholic teachings on climate change.

Climate Update:

Hundreds of Mercy students, sisters, lay associates and co-workers took to the streets, planted gardens, prayed for Earth and educated others about the climate crisis as part of the Global Climate Strike Sept. 20th.

You may find here a photo album of Mercy participation in this climate day of action.

“Our planet and impacted communities are crying out, and as people of faith, we must demand an end to the age of fossil fuels and encourage our leaders to adopt practical solutions to begin healing our earth,” the Institute Leadership Team wrote in a statement in support of the day of action.

The young people taking the lead in calling for bold responses to the climate crisis inspire us to continue to pray, advocate and adjust our lifestyles and use of fossil fuels.Cate Kelly, a senior at Mercy High School in Omaha, is one of those leaders, and she shares here her journey to forming a student-led organization and planning the city’s first climate strike.

Please join us in signing a Catholic Climate Covenant petition to U.S. senators that urges them to “ensure that our nation participates actively in international agreements which seek to prevent the impacts from climate change from doing irreparable harm to our common home and our shared future.”
