Sister M. Francis Clare Huard
Entered: September 24, 1957 – Portland, Maine
Current Ministry: Sacristan, St. Catherine’s Residence; prayer ministry
Motto: Caritas (Love)
I chose caritas, love, as my motto because it was also the daily motto of St. Francis of Assisi, my patron saint. On the inside of my ring are the words “My God and My All,” which have always been my aspiration as a sister—to remind me that God is the center of my life.
As an educator for nearly 50 years, I not only taught academics to my students, but also the importance of loving and serving God every day of their lives. Love of God comes first, then everything else falls into place. I expected a lot of my students in the classroom, as they in turn expected of me. I also played kickball and other games at recess with my elementary-school students. In addition, I taught myself to play the guitar and clarinet to encourage a love of music in my students’ lives, and I directed glee clubs wherever I taught. I taught French at the junior high and high school levels too!
One time a priest told me he couldn’t believe how my elementary-school students lined up at the end of recess with big smiles on their faces, ready and anxious to go back to class. He was amazed that I didn’t even need to ring a bell for their attention. Today I’m still in touch with some of my former students.
