Sister Janet Rock
Entered: September 8, 1945 – Burlington, Vermont
Current Ministry: Ministry of Prayer and Presence
Motto: Fiat voluntas tua (Thy will be done)
My life has been blessed as I have been connected with the Sisters of Mercy for 90-plus years. I grew up just down the street from our Motherhouse, known as Mount St. Mary Convent, in Burlington, Vermont, and then in 1945 entered the Community. I taught students in several Vermont parishes. At that time, I went by my religious name, Sister M. Anthony. The majority of my years as a teacher and vice principal were spent at Mater Christi School, a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Mercy.
After my retirement from education, I happily accepted the opportunity to be in charge of the buildings and grounds at the Motherhouse. In 2018, I moved to Our Lady of Providence Residence in neighboring Winooski, Vermont, with 15 of our Sisters. I feel fortunate to be able to share community with my sisters in Mercy, with the opportunity to continue to pray and socialize with each other, as well as connect with members of other religious communities and laymen and women.
I am grateful both for the great care we received at Mount St. Mary’s (from the staff and our sisters) and the continuing gift of thoughtful, generous care we experience daily at this Residence. I feel that we, Sisters of Mercy, have found our niche at Our Lady of Providence, while at the same time, retaining our Mercy charism and spirit. I, like everyone else, will be very happy when Covid-19 is no longer a threat, and we can once again enjoy meals with one another, and welcome our sisters and family members to join us for prayer, Mass, visits and meals. In the meantime, I will strive to live by my motto: “Thy Will Be Done.”
