Sister Joyce Bernadette MahanySister Joyce Mahany

70-year Jubilarian

Entered: September 12, 1950 – Portland, Maine

Current Ministry: Ministry of Prayer and Presence

Motto: Charity

From my earliest memories, I have always wanted to be a religious. The question: which order? On my mother's side of the family, she had a sister who was a Franciscan from Bay St. Paul, Canada. On my father's side, he had a sister who was a Sister of Mercy (with the special name "Sister Mary Mercy") in Portland, Maine. Being English speaking and not French, I decided the Sisters of Mercy would be best for me.

My aunt, Sister Mary Mercy, encouraged me to get a college education first and then to enter. I attended Husson College in Bangor, Maine, for two years. While at Husson, I dated and also attended religious ceremonies at the local parish.

When I realized I enjoyed the religious activities more than being on a date, I knew I wanted religious life. I have had 70 years of total happiness and gratitude for my vocation and have never had a moment' s regret.
