Sister Mary PendergastSister Mary Pendergast

50-year Jubilarian

Entered: June 26, 1970  Cumberland, Rhode Island

Current Ministry: Ecology/Justice
Motto: I Thirst for the Lord

The one constant of the last 50 years has been change itself!  I entered in 1970, so experimentation in community life, in dress, in ministry was in full swing following the directives of Vatican II.  Looking back, my 38 years of teaching children under six went by in a whirlwind of prayer, study, changing educational practice and music. The Cosmic Education of Maria Montessori was transformative and it dovetailed perfectly with my discovery of the celebratory Creation Spirituality and the wonder of the New Story.

After a serious illness, the opportunity to spend five years at a Christian Ashram practicing meditation and learning to live in harmony with the land and her creatures presented itself, and the critical strands of my life coalesced.  Singing with Carolyn McDade was a highlight that deepened me as I entered into the ministry of ecology and justice.  "What a joy it is to be a Sister of Mercy!"  (Frances Warde).
