My mother read Little Golden Books to me. We only had a few so somehow, by age two, it "clicked" and I was reading on my own: everything from box labels to my father's college textbooks.
Our neighbor's Catholic Digest, which the mail carrier accidently put in our mailbox, was my first encounter with the Church and with religious life. Both, obviously, made quite an impression on me. Rarely did I go to any church, and the local Catholic school in Paradise (California) was not available to me, so I read a lot.
An Irish priest introduced me to the Sisters of Mercy. They were friendly and welcoming--and accepted me into their midst not even two years after I was baptized. It was like coming home to be among them. I made my vows there in 1969.
I was educated as a nurse. I have worked in hospitals in Sacramento and Redding, and I even got to work at Sacramento's Mercy Clinic at Loaves & Fishes for 14 years. What changes I have seen in all those fields and in the patterns of religious life! God has been so generous to me. I really look forward to seeing what comes next!
