What We Do

As was customary for most Sisters of Mercy, as we settled in a new community, we served the needs of the area. Most often it meant opening a school or hospital. Today, our sponsored/co-sponsored/affiliated ministries include: four colleges and universities, five high schools, a middle school, and three hospital systems made up of numerous hospitals and four individual hospitals. Mercy Housing, one of the largest providers of affordable housing, has a base in Denver, Colo., but provides housing in several states.

In addition, many of our sisters and associates serve in ministries other than the sponsored and co-sponsored Mercy institutions including: spirituality and retreat work; diocesan and pastoral services; peace and justice initiatives; parish ministry; religious and academic education at all levels; hospitals and healthcare services and facilities; literacy centers and programs; hospitality houses; nursing homes; social services; counseling services; transitional houses; overseas ministry; prison ministry; long-term care facilities; and housing for families and elderly.

We are also responding to today's issues, such as ending human trafficking, protecting the environment, seeking immigration reform and addressing the causes and effects of violence and racism.
