The second of two blogs about service opportunities at Assumption. Read part one here.

The Belize team worked with Hand in Hand Ministries to write and film house-blessing prayer services for clients receiving a home they helped build with volunteers.

The Nicaragua team also worked with Hand in Hand ministries. Hand-in-Hand operates a school in Managua; like all schools, they had not been on campus since last March. Assumption students exchanged letters sharing their pandemic experiences with the students, giving both groups a richer experience of the other culture. Additionally, our students participated in a live zoom call with students in Nicaragua, during which they conducted a drumming circle using 5-gallon buckets and wooden spoons.

Our Cincinnati team worked with Franciscan Ministries to write an article for their newsletter.  They also filmed a series of activities (chair exercises, singing, etc.) for sisters in the retirement community who haven’t had outside visitors. Finally, they wrote and filmed morning shared prayer experiences for other groups of volunteers.

Cambiada al servir

El segundo de dos blogs sobre oportunidades de servicio en Assumption. Lean la primera parte aquí.

El equipo de Belice trabajó con Hand in Hand Ministries (Apostolados Mano a Mano) para escribir y filmar los servicios de bendición de casas para clientes que reciben una casa construida junto con voluntarias/os.

El equipo de Nicaragua también trabajó con Hand in Hand Ministries. Hand-in-Hand opera una escuela en Managua; como todas las escuelas, no han estado en sus campos desde marzo pasado. Las estudiantes de Assumption intercambiaron cartas con estudiantes compartiendo sus experiencias sobre la pandemia, dando a ambos grupos una experiencia más rica de la otra cultura. Además, nuestras estudiantes participaron en una llamada en vivo por Zoom con estudiantes en Nicaragua, donde realizaron un círculo de tambores utilizando baldes de 5 galones y cucharas de madera.

Nuestro equipo de Cincinnati trabajó con Franciscan Ministries (Apostolados Franciscanos) para escribir un artículo para su boletín. También filmaron una serie de actividades (ejercicios de silla, canto, etc.) para las hermanas de la comunidad de jubiladas que no han tenido visitas externas. Finalmente, escribieron y filmaron experiencias de oración matutina compartida para otros grupos de voluntarias/os.

What Will Become of Us? The Impact of Extractivism on Future Generations

There is a spiritual bond between Indigenous people and the land. 

The Earth is our mother, and she cradles the bones of our ancestors. The land has memory, and it remembers the steps of past generations that are alive in us still. When we are on our ancestral grounds, we are home. We can feel the land welcome us home. We can lift our heads a little higher and breathe a little deeper, because we are home and at one with the land.

How long will this be true for Indigenous cultures if extractivism continues as it has? The deforestation, pipelines, mining, overgrazing and GMOS are destroying the lands of our people.  The waters are no longer drinkable and are not safe to bathe babies in. Greed and disregard have left most Indigenous people with nothing but broken spirits and little hope. 

We are losing lands to mining, industry and deforestation. This means losing our languages, our way of life and the wisdom and knowledge of the elders because so much energy has to be put into just surviving. 

This is a tragedy that goes far beyond losing a homeland. It is a tragedy that robs a people of their culture, their connection to the past and the future. It is robbing whole populations of hope and their spirit.

¿Qué será de nosotros? El Impacto del Extractivismo en las Generaciones Futuras

Existe un vínculo espiritual entre los pueblos indígenas y la tierra. 

La Tierra es nuestra madre, y ella acuna los huesos de nuestros antepasados. La tierra tiene memoria, y recuerda los pasos de generaciones pasadas que aún están vivas en nosotros. Cuando estamos en nuestros terrenos ancestrales, estamos en casa. Podemos sentir que la tierra nos da la bienvenida a casa. Podemos levantar la cabeza un poco más y respirar un poco más profundo, porque estamos en casa y somos uno con la tierra.

¿Cuánto tiempo será esto cierto para las culturas indígenas si el extractivismo continúa como lo ha hecho? La deforestación, los oleoductos, la minería, el sobrepastoreo y los OGM están destruyendo las tierras de nuestros pueblos.  Las aguas ya no son potables y no son seguras para bañar a los bebés. La codicia y el desprecio han dejado a la mayoría de los indígenas con nada más que espíritus rotos y poca esperanza. 

Estamos perdiendo tierras debido a la minería, la industria y la deforestación. Esto significa perder nuestros idiomas, nuestra forma de vida y la sabiduría y el conocimiento de los ancianos porque hay que poner tanta energía en sobrevivir. 

Esta es una tragedia que va mucho más allá de perder una patria. Es una tragedia que roba a un pueblo su cultura, su conexión con el pasado y el futuro. Está robando a poblaciones enteras la esperanza y su espíritu.

Guided in the Spirit of Mercy

In this extraordinary April, when we celebrate National Volunteer Month, Mercy Volunteers are more committed than ever to serving the most marginalized members of our communities. They continue to do so, some from community houses that have been deemed essential, to ensure that each person living on the margins continues to receive care and is not forgotten. During this special month of commemorating volunteers, follow along on our blog to read stories by alumni of Mercy Volunteer Corps whose lives have been forever changed through Mercy service.

I am a Mercy Volunteer Corps alumna, a Mercy Associate and a support person for the Philadelphia Mercy Volunteers. I served as a Mercy volunteer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at Project HOME from 2014–2015.

I attended a Mercy College, Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As fate would have it, I submitted my application to Mercy Volunteer Corps on December 12, 2013—Mercy Foundation Day. Perhaps it would serve a sign for the way Mercy would forever change the trajectory of my life. I had planned to do a year of service and then return to Pittsburgh for a master’s degree in social work. When I read the description of a volunteer at Project HOME, my mind was made up. I had always held a desire to work with those experiencing homelessness; to learn that outreach workers engaged people at the very basic level on the streets solidified my decision. I came, through my education and my year of service, to realize how Catherine McAuley’s deep desire to serve the poor resonated with me. The connection I desired between prayer and service took root.

Guiadas en el espíritu de la Misericordia

Soy ex voluntaria del Cuerpo de Voluntarios de la Misericordia, una Asociada de la Misericordia y apoyo a Voluntarios de la Misericordia de Filadelfia. Serví como voluntaria de la Misericordia en Filadelfia, Pensilvania, en el Proyecto HOGAR de 2014 a 2015.

Asistí a la Universidad de la Misericordia Carlow en Pittsburgh, Pensilvania. Como lo dispuso el destino, presenté mi solicitud al Cuerpo de Voluntarios de la Misericordia el 12 de diciembre de 2013, Día de Fundación de la Misericordia. Quizás sirva de señal sobre cómo la Misericordia cambiaría para siempre la trayectoria de mi vida. A Conversation with Catherine about COVID-19

For Mercy sisters, associates and companions; Mercy Volunteer Corps members; students and educators; and healers and helpers across the educational, health care and social service ministries of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley—who followed Christ through the path of Mercy—is our comforting animator. She is a guide, in all that we do: in joy or in sorrow, or in the mingling of the two.

No matter that she has been dead for 179 years. Thanks to my prayers, imagination and a little inspiration from the late Sister Maureen Scott, who once gave a talk on what a conversation between Catherine and Cardinal John Henry Newman would be like, I have likewise provided a conversation between Catherine and me in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

This fictitious interview has been edited for brevity and clarity. [All responses are quotes attributed to Catherine. Many of these quotes are from her writings to Mary de Sales White.]

Q:  With social distancing brought on by this pandemic, many are now working from home. As it turns out, the home has many distractions—for example, children. Beyond the stress of staying healthy and employed, we also need to instruct our children on the schooling they are missing. With no finish line to this amended reality, how are we to manage this newfound, stressful, unknown without-end?

Dr. Marie Metoyer: A remarkable life of faith and healing

Dr. Marie Metoyer is a living legacy of faith, healing and service. A psychiatrist who specialized in community mental health, the mother of five has long advocated for women’s rights, racial equality and black scholarship. She became a Mercy Associate in New Hampshire in 2016 and is both a grandmother and a theater goer who loves the musical “South Pacific.”

Now 94, Marie has upheld the twin pillars of her life—healing and faith—ever since she was given the example by her mother, Dr. Lena Edwards, who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964 for championing those same values.
