Gratitude, Care Packages, and Shoelaces

Sister Anne has been working at the Humanitarian Respite Center in Alamo, Texas, which was recently told it must vacate the premises within 90 days. She has been collecting shoelaces for migrants, whose laces are removed when they are taken into custody.

Hermana Anne ha estado trabajando en el Centro de Atención Humanitaria en Álamo, Texas, y recientemente se les informó que debe evacuar el local dentro de los siguientes 90 días. Ella ha estado recolectando cordones de zapatos para inmigrantes, pues se los quitan cuando se los llevan en custodia.

Sister Diane Guerin is heading to the U.S./Mexico border this January. She shares this reflection on migration and the Christmas season in preparation for her trip and as a reminder of what the story of Jesus’ birth is truly about.

The voices of the angels singing “Glory to God in the Highest” was still echoing in Mary’s ears as she greeted the arrival of the Magi. Her heart was full of wonder and love as she gazed at her newborn child. What the future would hold remained a mystery whose unfolding would come with time.

In high school, Sister Caroline Tweedy loved sports and the Sisters of Mercy.

A varsity basketball, volleyball and softball player all four years of high school at Catherine McAuley High School in Brooklyn, after graduation Caroline returned to her alma mater to teach physical education and coach the varsity basketball and volleyball teams.

“As one of the few lay teachers at the time, I worked side by side with the Sisters of Mercy and was enamored by their joy and commitment,” says Sister Caroline who taught there for seven years. “These women were grounded in their faith and lived out the Gospel values to serve others.” Read More »

V Encuentro Calls us to Mentor Young Hispanic Women

Since 1972, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has organized “Encuentros,” gatherings to build and enhance the participation of the Hispanic community in the Catholic Church.

From September 20-23, the V Encuentro in Grapevine, Texas once again drew 3,000 Hispanic/Latino leaders and delegates from around the United States to continue that important discussion. Sister Ivette Diaz shares her experience of being part of the V Encuentro as an exhibitor and a Latino woman at the event.

Participating in the V Encuentro was a profound and faith-filled experience for me. I did not know what to expect since this would be my first Encuentro experience. Being gathered with 3,000 Hispanics it was a moment of feeling great pride for our heritage and all that we have been able to contribute to the Catholic Church of the United States. Read More »
