Just Food

"Our lives depend on the fruits of creation; these cannot be reduced to mere objects to be recklessly handled and used."  -- Pope Francis World Food Day Message, October 16, 2019

Jubilee for the Earth is the theme for this year’s Season of Creation, which begins on the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation (September 1) and ends on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4). The ancient understanding of jubilee fits well with our call to conversion, as jubilee is an opportunity to restore balance in our relationship with creation, a relationship that has become skewed by exploitation and overconsumption.

Over the next five weeks we will reflect on a topic that binds us tightly to creation – food, a gift from Earth that not only sustains us, but links us with unknown sisters and brothers around the world.

This season we will explore:

  • Industrial food production: turning food into a commodity
  • Processed foods: their impact on the health and livelihoods of people around the world
  • Palm oil: a substance we encounter daily but maybe never heard of, but one that has serious negative impacts on many poor countries in the global south
  • Food waste I: shopping to avoid waste, reducing food waste at home
  • Food waste II: food dating, composting
